Mapping Out the Blog Ocean

When we look at the horizon of the ocean, we often get a feeling that we’re staring at an endless blue space and hearing the music of the wind chiming together with the sea makes it more mysterious. The blogosphere is like an ocean, everyone can find their place to blog.

Before setting your boat out towards the blog ocean you must have patience, self-discipline, and passion because it takes time to develop the skills to build a blog and to attract as many readers as you can. And without passion, your blog will just die away.

Identify your path, are you going north to catch Moby Dick or south to the tropics for exotic fish?

What type of readers do you want to attract?

Family and friends, gadget geeks, culture finders, businesses, book worms, travelers, etc. You can blog about a few things under your main topic but make sure you know how to organize your blogs so your readers will not have a hard time navigating through the site.

Don’t forget to bring the right bait when you’re going out to your destination.

How do you attract your readers’ attention?

Do you attract them by RSS, newsletters, putting your blogs in a popular social bookmarking sites, using great titles, using a strong theme in every blog you’ve made, following day to day trends and blog about them. This is where your creativity starts, you have to mix the ingredients to bait in the attention of your readers. I suggest to build your blog with great titles, a strong theme and apply an RSS button to your site, so readers can stay updated with your posts.  If you’re ready for a challenge, you can tackle up newsletters for your loyal readers.

You are at your destination and have the right bait. Do you know how to swing that fishing pole properly?

What can you learn from other bloggers?

You need help. We can’t do it alone, being alone in the ocean is boring and you’re just hauling a limited catch in your own boat, we need the help of other fishermen out there.  Not to mention we can learn from their expertise.  In the blogosphere, you’re not here just to make blogs, blogs, and… blogs but we’re here to go out meet people and share. You may learn and apply new things from reading other blogs. You could also make your comment section as a discussion forum. You and your readers can benefit in that conversation. It’s a win-win result if you ask me.

Confession: If I see a long comment thread, I have a tendency to think that this blog is “a Must-Read” or “Definitely worth checking out!”

What do you think? How do you picture the Blogosphere?

My first picture of the Blogosphere was a City, actually, but I changed it to an Ocean because it’s much more scenic.
