Look at you, AJ. Great to see you speak. Funny that you and I became friends in the more natural way, though the construct for us first meeting was an industry-related event. Doesn’t happen that way very often anymore, does it?

I have friends of all ages, ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds who live all over the world, many of whom I’ve never met. But most people I become friends with now are either friends of a friend, or “online friends” first. Interesting…

Thanks, homie! This was a talk I did earlier this year to a group of Fundraisers in the UK. :)

It is interesting. I used to be a guy that “didn’t need new friends” because I had all my old friends. For the past few years, I’ve been connecting with people all over online and now because of events and crazy project, we get to meet face to face all these awesome peeps from all over that we wouldn’t have met, had it not been for a hunk of servers in San Fran. :)

It’s been the same for me for well over a decade now. But as time moves forward, I’m really starting to change my views on social media. Not for better or worse, just becoming more clear on the utility, value and nature of online relationships. They don’t really differ from real-world relationships all that much, except for the fact that they develop in a bit of a vacuum.

I don’t waste time building up a huge Facebook friends list, because, in the end, whether you’re an online friend or not, I really don’t have the time to keep up with the passive updates of more than about 250 people. I’ve unfollowed and unfriended a bunch in the last year for this reason.

But your point here is more about fans, and followers. To that idea, you’re spot on. Regardless of how many friends/fans/followers/supporters you have, remember that they’re people, and listen to what they have to say. See what they have to offer. You’ll be surprised…
